This is an original 1966 Dodge Coronet 440 with 426 Hemi. It is a column shift automatic that was a former weekend drag strip car. As such, there were only 11k original miles on the car. Luckily the car had not been tubbed or cut and there was very little rust. The car had been sitting for many years and was not running when we got it.

It came about because Plymouth wanted to take advantage of NHRA and NASCAR rule changes regarding maximum displacement. The result was a V-8 that depending on compression ratio could rip off 415-425 horsepower during chassis dyno-testing. And it was fast, real fast.

The 426 Hemi’s ratings were pure fiction. Actual dyno tests with 480-500HP of stock Hemis have shown that. The 426 Hemi and the 340 were probably two of the most-underrated engines of the era. The same is true for the LS6 454, which will handily make 500HP in stock trim.

I also have the Motor Trend article of the 62 Dart Max Wedge 410 hp 413. It ran 13.44 @ 109 bone stock. I also have a Hot Rod road test of a 63 Maxie 426 with 415 hp and it ran 12.60's with just cheater slicks.
